Happy National Principals Month to our amazing LEES principal, Mrs. Angel Defield! 🌟

Mrs. Defield works so hard every single day to make Louisa East Elementary the best place to learn, grow, and have fun! From greeting us with a warm smile in the morning to encouraging us in the halls and supporting teachers, her leadership makes a huge difference in our school. Thank you, Mrs. Defield, for your dedication, kindness, and continuous support for our students, staff, and families! Louisa East is so lucky to have you!

Since October is Principal Appreciation Month, we took this opportunity to ask Mrs. Defield who her greatest source of inspiration has been in her life. She shared that her parents, who were both educators, have had the most significant influence on her. She graciously shared, "My greatest inspiration as an educator has always been my parents. ❤️📚 My dad, Mr. Chuck Pack, was a math teacher who taught at LCHS, Tolsia, Fort Gay High School, and ACTC. He was also an avid sports enthusiast who coached and served as the athletic director at LCHS. My mom, Mrs. Billie West, taught at both Louisa West and Louisa East and later served as a reading interventionist before retiring from Lawrence County Schools. Even in retirement, she continues to volunteer her time helping students learn and grow through reading.

Through their example, my parents instilled in me the importance of relationships and the power of building strong, meaningful connections with students and families. They taught me that education is about so much more than academics—it is about knowing your students, believing in them, supporting their families, and helping each child discover their own potential. I am incredibly grateful to have learned from two educators who have dedicated their lives to making a difference in the lives of children. "❤️🐾

Celebrating Red Ribbon Week at LC Schools! Next week, our LC Schools will be honoring Red Ribbon Week! Be sure to check your school's posts to discover the exciting activities they have planned for the week ahead!

The Importance of Red Ribbon Week for Our Students! Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness initiative. This week provides a dedicated opportunity for schools, families, and communities to unite in promoting the significance of making safe, healthy, and drug-free choices.

Throughout the week, our emphasis extends beyond simply saying “no.” Students will learn how to:
- Make Healthy Choices & Decisions
- Build Character & Confidence
- Identify Trusted Adults

How Parents & the Community Can Get Involved! Drug prevention is most effective when schools and families work together. Here’s how you can support our students during this week:
- Start a dialogue by discussing safe choices and the risks associated with substance use with your child.
- Join in on spirit days and encourage your child to participate in our Red Ribbon Week dress-up days and activities.
- Let’s all serve as role models by promoting positive, healthy habits at home.

Together, we can work to build a safer, healthier future for our youth!

A Quick Note on Attendance at LC Schools

Dear LC Schools Families,
We know how much love, effort, and care you pour into getting your children ready for school every day. Being a parent comes with an endless list of responsibilities, and we see the incredible dedication you bring to our schools.

As we partner with you in your child’s education, we want to share a gentle reminder about school attendance. In Kentucky, chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year for any reason—including both excused and unexcused absences. That equals just 17 days in a whole school year, or about 2 days a month.

Because missing just two days a month can add up quickly, it can unexpectedly affect your child's learning momentum, reading progress, and social connections with friends and teachers.

We know that life happens—illness, family emergencies, and difficult mornings are real. Please know that our school doors and hearts are always open to you. If your family is facing challenges with transportation, morning routines, health, or anything else affecting school attendance, please reach out to us. We are here to support you, listen, and work together to find solutions.

Thank you for everything you do to support your child’s growth and for being such a vital part of our Lawrence County Schools family!

Warmly,
Lawrence County Schools
