Mike.Armstrong@Lawrence.kyschools.usFolks – today, December 21st, is the 95th instructional day of school this 2011-2012 school year. [When you add-in our 4 PD days and 4 holidays (including Christmas and New Year’s Day), we will be 103 days into the 2011-2012 school calendar.] Congratulations on a great first semester! Both our district and school level MAP data indicates growth in reading and math assessments. Likewise, LCHS acknowledges eighteen months of School Improvement Grant (SIG) implementation. Couple their on-going SIG work there at LCHS along with the emerging College and Career Ready expectations (and its ever increasing impact down through the middle and upper elementary grades) and we can see that our work will never cease to be both challenging yet reinforcing. So what does the second semester hold for us? Yet two additional MAP assessments will further inform our instruction as we prepare for the spring state assessments using the new content standards as the basis for gauging student learning. Acknowledging the ill-impact “snow days” have on student learning, “Snow Packets” will, for the first time, be available to students. These packets are intended to help keep our students “tuned-in” to their school work in a more purposeful and intentional way. As a pilot district, we will likewise be participating in the new principal and certified teacher “Professional Growth and Evaluation System.” In addition, the school/building roof replacement/renovation projects will be commencing soon.
Beginning too on January 1, 2012 is the implementation of the district’s new 100% Tobacco Free Policies. You will see the new signage advising of such upon your return on January 3, 2012. Promoting both a climate and culture that is tobacco free will send a powerful and positive message to all of our children and youth.
We will also be carefully watching the work of the Kentucky General Assembly as they prepare the Commonwealth’s next two-year budget. All of the news that I read indicates the budget will be very, very tight. The budget afforded public education remains to be seen.
All of this activity brings to mind the saying “May you live in interesting times.” Boy – do we ever!!!
